Fitzgibbon Cup Group B: IT Carlow V Trinity College – The Irish Independent – January 25 2019

Nolan gets DJ’s Carlow men back on track

IT Carlow 0-24 Trinity College 1-8

IT Carlow got their Fitzgibbon Cup campaign back on track with an emphatic win over Trinity College at Santry Avenue.

Both sides are in contention for a knockout place with one win apiece, but momentum is on Carlow’s side moving into the final round of Group B.

With inter-county stars Colin Dunford of Waterford and Richie Leahy of Kilkenny in fine form, the Barrowsiders raced into a 0-7 to 0-1 lead on the first-quarter mark. Seamus Casey (two), Chris Nolan and Tommy Nolan extended that lead before Trinity responded with a Marc Corry point.

Goalkeeper Enda Rowland landed a second long-range free to give Carlow an unassailable 0-15 to 0-3 cushion into the break.

Fionn Ó Riain Broin blazed a Trinity penalty wide after the break before Dublin hurler Cian O’Sullivan fired home an 45th-minute goal.

This was only a minor set-back for a superior IT Carlow. The impressive Nolan brought his personal tally to eight points in the closing moments for DJ Carey’s men.
