GAELIC FOOTBALL: LEINSTER SCHOOLS SFC ‘A’

Eoin and Whitehall remain in contention for Leinster knockout places

COLAISTE Eoin and St Aidan’s CBS, Whitehall remain firmly in contention for a spot in the knockout rounds of the Leinster Schools Senior ‘A’ Football Championship, which are set to take place in early January 2019.

Eoin were set to get their Group Two campaign up and running away to Scoil Mhuire, Clane yesterday, before a waterlogged pitch eventually forced a postponement. This encounter is now scheduled to take place at some point in the coming week.

These schools have proven to be familiar foes at the provincial grade in recent seasons. The Gaelscoil recorded a 2-12 to 1-7 group stage victory over the north Kildare outfit last December, while they also had the measure of Mhuire in similar circumstances two years ago (1-11 to 2-7).

Both of those games took place in Silver Park, Leopardstown, so a trip to Clane will pose a different challenge for the southsiders on this occasion.

Eoin also have a meeting with Knockbeg College to look forward to during a hectic conclusion to 2018.

Because of the uneven number of teams in this phase of the competition (19), one of the six groups contains four schools.

Aidan’s and St Benildus College find themselves in this section alongside Naas CBS and Maynooth Secondary School.

While they have some breathing space in the quest for a top-two spot, defending champions Naas CBS are once again the team to beat in the Br Bosco Cup.

Having overcome the challenge of Aidan’s with all of 17 points to spare (4-18 to 1-10), the Lilywhites maintained their excellent form with a 6-14 to 0-5 demolition of Maynooth at IT Blanchardstown yesterday.

The race to see who will join them in the next round remains alive, with the forthcoming clash between Aidan’s and Maynooth set to determine the fate of both teams. With one win apiece under their belts, there will be little room for error on either side.
