Brennan on song in easy win for holders Blackrock

RUGBY: The excellent Ed Brennan helped himself to a brace of tries at Donnybrook yesterday, when defending champions Blackrock College blitzed St Mary’s College in the opening round of the Leinster Schools’ Junior Cup.

‘Rock are chasing a fourth consecutive title at this grade, and thanks to first-half tries from Cian Duffy and full-back Brennan – as well as five points from the boot of David Fitzgibbon – they led 15-3 at the break.

And with Brennan and Duffy adding further tries after the re-start, the Williamstown school eventually finished with 29 points to spare (32-3).

Blackrock will be joined at the quarter-final stage by CBC Monkstown, after they recorded a comprehensive 20-0 triumph over Dundalk Grammar School at Anglesea Road.

Tries from loosehead prop Luke Hallam and Liam Forster offered Monkstown a 10-0 interval advantage. A third try by Monkstown flanker Tadhg Quinn effectively placed the outcome beyond doubt on 43 minutes.

Then thanks to a fourth unconverted score through full-back Theo Brady deep into second-half stoppage-time, the impressive Monkstown eased towards the last-eight.
