SEAN Motherway and Robert Markey Fox were the scorers-in-chief for Scoil Aodháin in Alfie Byrne Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Their combined tally of 3-6 proved decisive in ensuring that the Collins Avenue school enjoyed a comprehensive victory against St Benildus College in the Dublin Schools Junior ‘A’ Hurling Shield decider.

With the wind at their backs, Aodháin hit the ground running from the word go in this encounter, as they raced into a 2-4 to 0-0 lead with just 10 minutes gone, the goals coming from the pacy Darragh McDonagh and powerful full-forward Motherway.

Difficult

Benildus were finding it extremely difficult to settle into the proceedings, and even though corner-forward Conor O’Dwyer got their account under way midway through the half, Scoil Aodháin finished the half strongly with further majors from the influential Markey Fox and Motherway, giving Aodháin an insurmountable 19-point advantage (4-9 to 0-2) during the interval.

This left the Kilmacud school needing a miracle upon the resumption, but to their credit, they displayed tremendous spirit to reduce the margin to 12 points heading into the final quarter, thanks to a goal from close-in by Michael Crowley, and further scores from substitute Mattie Hogan (two), O’Dwyer and Tom Fox.

Aodháin were proving to be rather wasteful in front of goal, but they were always in a comfortable position, and they eventually opened their scoring in the second period with a goal from replacement Daniel Byrne on 54 minutes, and this was followed by a late point courtesy of Markey Fox (bringing his total to 1-4), as Aodháin eased over the line.
