DESPITE a very game performance, Coláiste Eoin ultimately came off second best against an impressive St Peter’s of Wexford in a keenly contested Leinster Post Primary Schools Junior Hurling ‘A’ encounter, played in Belfield on Monday afternoon.

This was always going to be a tough assignment for the Booterstown school, as they were facing a St Peter’s outfit that included a host of players from their comprehensive Leinster Colleges Juvenile ‘A’ hurling shield triumph against Birr Community School from May 2011.

On that occasion, John Lee Meyler and Jake Firman were particularly prominent for the Summerhill men, and they were also in good form against the gaelscoil, as Meyler proved to be a strong driving force from the middle of the field, chipping in with a fine point from play for good measure.

Firman was always a threat on the edge of the square, and he finished with a grand total of 1-3 (0-2 from frees), his major proving particularly important in ensuring that his side had the measure of their opponents for the duration of the tie.

Half-forwards Shane Wilde and Aaron Maddock also kept the Dubliners on their toes throughout the afternoon, while wing-back Joe O’Connor also impressed for the Slaneysiders. Eoin did continue to battle right up until the final moments, but Peter’s simply had too much for them on the day.

Eoin will have the opportunity to bounce back from this defeat next week, however, when they face Castlecomer Community School, who were on the receiving end of a 13-point defeat (2-17 to 2-4) against local rivals Kilkenny CBS earlier on Monday.
