ROUND-UP
Eoin hurlers triumph
Daire Walsh
COLAISTE Eoin progressed to the ‘winners section’ of the Leinster Senior ‘A’ Hurling Championship with a magnificent 0-17 to 0-11 triumph over Kilkenny CBS at Park/Ratheniska, Laois last Friday.
Set to take place in early January, the second round of the competition keeps the winners and losers of the opening phase on separate sides of the draw. Another victory for Eoin and fellow Metropolitans Dublin North will see them advance to the last-four, while a defeat will offer them another chance at the quarter-final stage.
Eoin played with the aid of a strong breeze during the opening period of Friday’s game and stormed in front thanks to points from Darach Mac Giolla Bhríde (two) and Seamus Ó Fiachna (free). Despite coming into this game as Leinster league champions, their Noreside opponents were nine points in arrears (0-11 to 0-2) at the break.
The southside outfit maintained their momentum through Ó Fiachna (free) and Tom Ó hEachtigheirn after the restart, before the Kilkenny challenge finally kicked into gear. They cut the gap to four – 0-15 to 0-11 – in the closing moments, only for the outstanding duo Ó Fiachna and Ó hEachtigheirn to seal a deserved victory for Coláiste Eoin.
