PADRAIG Puirséil amassed an outstanding individual tally of 2-6 last Monday to guide Coláiste Eoin towards an impressive victory over Scoil Mhuire, Clane in the Leinster Schools Senior ‘A’ Football Championship.
Their comprehensive 5-14 to 2-9 triumph ensured the Gaelcholáiste finished on top of Group B – and will now face rival Dublin outfit St Aidan’s CBS in the opening knockout round of the Br Bosco Cup.
Eoin were facing Mhuire in the competition for a third successive season, having defeated the north Kildare side on home soil in the previous two campaigns.
While both teams had overcome the challenge of Knockbeg College in their opening group games, Eoin’s 3-10 to 0-7 success was the more emphatic of the two. Indeed, courtesy of goals by Rúairi Ó Seanáin, Brian Ó Síthigh, Puirséil and Eoin Ó Ceallacháin, they developed a 16-point interval lead (4-8 to 0-4) in Mhuire’s back yard.
Shane O’Sullivan had kicked a brace of points for the Clane school in the second-quarter and they narrowed the gap on the resumption through a Sam McCormack goal. The attacking duo registered a combined haul of 1-8, but it wasn’t enough to stem the Coláiste Eoin tide.
Puirséil was a persistent threat throughout the contest and he added his second goal with a smooth left-footed finish. Although a Dean O’Shea three-pointer followed for Mhuire, it proved to be a mere consolation on a day when their Booterstown counterparts reigned supreme.
