DUBLIN North dug deep at DCU’s Sportsgrounds last Saturday afternoon to secure a 2-16 to 1-16 triumph Wexford Schools in the Round Two of the Leinster Senior ‘A’ Hurling ‘Group Teams’ Section.

The defending provincial champions now advance to the final stages of this preliminary phase, where they face the winners of a clash between Dublin South and Offaly Schools. Their fixture was set to take place yesterday at O’Connor Park, Tullamore, only to be postponed until a later date.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Paul O’Brien’s side in their weekend fixture as they trailed the Slaneysiders 0-5 to 0-2 during the early exchanges. Yet with Eoin Carney, Kevin Byrne and Conor Scully leading the way in defence, they gradually found their feet.

Belvedere College student Diarmuid Breslin grabbed a goal for the Metropolitans in the 26th-minute – propelling them towards a 1-8 to 0-9 interval buffer. Wexford rallied to regain the lead after the restart, before Breslin added a second major inside the final-quarter.

The St Brigid’s clubman finished with a personal tally of 2-3, while custodian John Sammon was also in fine form throughout.

Wexford threatened to spoil the party with a goal of their own, but Dublin North amassed five points without reply to seal their spot in the next round.
