ST Mary’s, Glasnevin will represent Dublin in the All-Ireland Schools Camogie series after they recorded a 5-2 to 3-1 triumph over Loreto Beaufort in a Senior ‘C’ Championship final at Ringsend last Friday.
With a large contingent of players from the local Na Fianna and Erin’s Isle clubs, Mary’s were aiming to build on a semi-final success against Our Lady’s Grove Secondary School. Yet, they didn’t always have it their own way and trailed the Rathfarnham side by six points during the early exchanges.
However, with Nicole Mitchell and Hannah Gaffney in fine form, they held a slender advantage at the midway stage. Mitchell offered a consistent threat at centre-forward and finished with a brace of goals to her name.
Gaffney, Nicole Byrne and substitute Lucy Watson also contributed a goal apiece. At the opposite end, Eimear Kearney and Naoise Finnegan kept the Loreto attack at bay for much of the second period. A number of the Mary’s side will return to Clanna Gael Fontenoy tomorrow for a Junior ‘C’ county showdown with Gaelcholáiste Reachrann before facing Colaiste Naomh Cormac of Offaly in a national quarter-final on Saturday.
