CAOIMHE Maher produced a powerful individual display at Clanna Gael Fontenoy last Friday, as St Mary’s College, Naas defeated Maryfield College (Drumcondra) in the Dublin Schools Senior Camogie ‘B’ Championship decider.

As recently as 2014, Maryfield had claimed the ‘A’ Championship crown. They also competed in last year’s ‘A’ Shield showpiece, where they suffered a reversal at the hands of Loreto Beaufort, Rathfarnham at the same venue.

However, courtesy of points from Emma Kielty, Maher and Aoife Stynes, it was their opponents who hit the ground running at Sean Moore Park.

Maher underlined her importance to the south Kildare school with three successful frees, and following an additional score by Maria Doyle, they brought a commanding seven-point cushion (0-8 to 0-1) into the interval. Maryfield began the second half with great intent, and Mary’s defensive lynchpin Sarah Cullen had to be on her toes to stem the flow of attacks from the north Dubliners.

Yet, Maryfield struggled for scores throughout the course of the action and a Maher goal at the end of the third quarter effectively placed the outcome beyond doubt.

Sara Carroll also contributed a brace of goals for the rampant Sallins Road outfit, while Ciara Friel also produced an impressive display as Mary’s finished with all of 21 points to spare (3-15 to 0-3) over their Drumcondra counterparts.
