A STRONG second-half performance at Parnell Park last Saturday helped Dublin North to progress in the Leinster Schools Senior ‘A’ Hurling Championship at the expense of county rivals Dublin South.
A meeting with Good Counsel, New Ross was the prize on offer for the winners of this ‘Group Team’ encounter, and a 0-3 salvo by Micheal Murphy helped North to open up an early advantage. South gathered momentum with unanswered scores from Alan Connolly, Liam Murphy (two) and Fionn O Ceallaigh, but North kept in contention with fine contributions by Derwin (two), Micheal Murphy, Liam Dunne and David Phelan.
An opening period haul of seven points by Liam Murphy ultimately guided South towards a 0-10 to 0-9 interval cushion, but North moved ahead with consecutive scores from Sean Currie (two) and Murphy on the resumption. They gained firm control when Currie, Enda O’Donnell and Micheal Murphy were all on target, and though Liam Murphy kept their opponents within reach, North replied with further points by Kevin Burke, Micheal Murphy and Derwin.
Fintan Clandillon’s South gave themselves a fighting chance with goals from Tom Aherne and substitute Ciaran Nagle in the closing stages, but Derwin’s fifth of the action capped off an accomplished display by Dublin North.
