Ruairi Shields, Niall McEniff and Adam McEvoy contributed second-half tries at Donnybrook yesterday, as St Mary’s College comprehensively defeated Newbridge College in the first round of the Leinster Schools’ Senior Cup. Mary’s had dominated possession during the first-half, and even though Leinster U19 star Patrick Ryan was in excellent form for Newbridge, a determined Mary’s eventually opened the scoring in the 29th-minute.

A neat off-load by fly-half Tom Murray put Conway through for a try in the right-corner, and courtesy of a stunning conversion by Shields, the south Dubliners were 7-0 in front at the break.

This prove to be a major tonic for Mary’s (who include former Munster player Johne Murphy amongst their coaching team), and thanks to quickfire tries from Shields and McEniff, they opened up a sizeable gap.

After much persistence a fourth Mary’s try arrived through replacement scrum-half McEvoy, before Newbridge gained some solace in the form of a consolation score by winger Kevin Kyne in the final minute of the contest.
