South narrowly defeated by Good Counsel in their opener

THERE was disappointment for Dublin South at Cushionstown GAA on Tuesday afternoon when they suffered a narrow defeat to Good Counsel, New Ross in their opening game of the Leinster Schools’ Senior Hurling ‘A’ League.

A second-half goal from Terenure College’s Kevin Desmond had edged the Metropolitans into the ascendancy, but following a late surge by their Wexford counterparts, they ultimately were on the wrong side of a one-point reversal (2-14 to 2-13).

Good Counsel were playing with a strong breeze in the opening period, but with Cuala attacker Liam Murphy proving to be a reliable source of scores, they remained firmly in contention. Murphy claimed a hard-earned goal for Cronan Dooley’s side, but even though Emmet Allen and Diarmuid O’Flynn made strong contributions, they were facing into a 1-12 to 1-9 deficit at the midway point.

Yet, South were confident of turning the game around upon the resumption, with full-back Jamie Moulds and Conor O’Donoghue starting to make a big impact on the action. O’Donoghue split the posts with a long-range free, and with Murphy’s overall haul of 1-6 being supplemented by three points from centre-forward Allen, they did their best to keep the scoreboard ticking away.

Desmond also finished with 1-1 to his name, and despite coming up short in the end, they will be aiming to get some points on the board when they face Offaly Schools at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown tomorrow.
