A 2-2 haul from Ben Mooney was crucial at Abbottstown last Friday morning, when Malahide CS held off a late surge from Maynooth Post-Primary to claim the Dublin Schools’ Juvenile Hurling ‘C’ Championship title.
It has been a truly memorable year for hurling in the Broomfield school, and in addition to this U14 success, they also secured the Dublin Junior Hurling ‘C’ and Senior Hurling ‘C’ crowns – as well as the Leinster SH ‘C1’ Championship last month.
Full-forward Mooney – a first year student in the school – was a lively presence throughout the course of the hour, and his early two-goal salvo helped Malahide to develop a strong platform.
Dublin North College stars Jack Keogh and Darragh McLoughney (who was named player of the match on the day) also impressed, while the dead-ball accuracy of Conor Hine helped them to create a 2-6 to 1-3 advantage.
However, Maynooth did work their way back into contention upon the resumption, and Malahide goalkeeper Ciaran O’Donnell was called into action on a number of occasions. Indeed, Maynooth had a brace of three-point opportunities in the closing minutes, but after holding firm under pressure, Malahide CS finished with three points to spare (2-12 to 2-9).
