FOLLOWING a run of four games without a win in all competitions, Cobh Ramblers secured their second victory of 2016 against Cabinteely FC at Stradbrook last Friday evening.

Centre-half Cian Kingston opened the scoring during the Leesiders’ 2-1 Airtricity League First Division success over the Dublin outfit, and although he was delighted to get on the scoresheet, he stressed that claiming all three points was the important aspect of the game.

“It’s good to start off with a goal for the lads, and get them going for the game, but what’s important is the three points,” Kingston said.

“Get down here as well on a tough night, [it was] never going to be easy.

“It was a great ball in by Shane [O’Connor]. Shane has that every week.

“I knew where he was going to put it, and I just got in the right position thankfully and put it into the back of the net.”

After entering the interval period with a 1-0 cushion, Cobh doubled their lead within 60 seconds of the restart through the lively Cory Galvin.

A 57th-minute goal for the hosts from Ben Hanrahan subsequently increased the pressure on Stephen Henderson’s charges, but Kingston felt that they coped well with the Cabinteely attacking threat during the latter stages of the contest.

“We started off great in the second half. It was just a relapse, they got their goal, but I don’t really think they affected the game much. I think we did well.

“There’s obviously going to be a bit of pressure towards the end, but that’s normal.

“I was happy just to finish off the game with three points.”

Cobh’s triumph is all the more impressive when you consider the difficulties they had en route to the south Dublin venue.

After their bus broke down on the journey from St Colman’s Park, a replacement coach was ultimately required.

This meant that the Ramblers squad and backroom staff were behind schedule in arriving at Stradbrook, but Kingston acknowledged that these things can happen in football, and you just have to move forward when they do.

Kingston added: “I hope more buses break down if it means we get three points at the end of the night!

“We had a bit of a bad trip up. The bus broke down, and we just got here an hour before kick-off, but that happens.

“You’ve just got to get on with it.”
