FOLLOWING their 3-1 win over UCD at the AUL Complex last Sunday afternoon, Cork City U19 supremo Stephen Bermingham was thrilled that his side were able to keep their winning run going.

The defending champions have began their Southern Elite Division campaign for 2016 in considerable style, but even though his side finished with two goals to spare, he acknowledged that a 82nd-minute goal from UCD substitute Robert Manly had placed them under pressure prior to Chiedozie Ogbene’s stoppage-time clincher.

“Getting the result was very important to us. They came back into it, they were coming very much into it. We were under a bit of pressure there, and obviously the third goal killed them off,” Bermingham remarked.

“When we were 2-0 up, we were defending well. A lapse of concentration there gave them a chance, and they took their chance, made a right game of it for the last 10, 12 minutes.”

This latest result means that they have claimed four victories from as many games to date in the division. While Bermingham is eager to operate on a game-by-game basis during the current term, he was pleased that they were able to overcome the strong challenge of UCD on the day.

“Yeah, it’s four from four. We’re kind of taken it game-by-game. We’ve a couple of tough games coming up. We obviously take on Limerick next week then we have Bray Wanderers the week after. We’re just taking it one game at a time.

“The lads are training very well, and it’s always tough to come up to Dublin against a UCD team that are always strong.

“They’ve a lot of players coming through the club, so it’s great to come up here to get a result.”

At the start of last year’s league, Cork suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of the Students, and when you consider that this was the most recent loss for the Leesiders, Bermingham was thrilled that they were able to come out on top in the end.

“It’s just great to come here to Dublin and get a result. It’s always tough. We came up here last year and we got beaten.

“We came up here and lost 1-0 the first game of the season last year. It was kind of a close game that game as well. That game [today] was close until the third goal killed it.

“That game wasn’t over, even at 2-0 it wasn’t over,” Bermingham added.
