LEINSTER SENIOR CUP
SHAMROCK ROVERS………………………… 1
BOHEMIANS………………………………………. 1
(Shamrock Rovers won 5-4 on penalties)
SHAMROCK ROVERS knocked out their historic Dublin rivals Bohemians last night after penalties were required to settle a nerve-shredding encounter.
120 minutes of ferocious combat failed to produce a winner, but it was Rovers who held their nerve in the shoot-out, winning 5-4.
Oskar Jansson saved from Dave Mulcahy in sudden death, after Rovers’ Sean Gannon and Bohs’ Neil Harney had missed in the shoot-out.
Rovers had broken the deadlock on 47 minutes with a fine strike from Sean Dixon, but Bohemians replied through Paddy Seery 14 minutes later.
Two minutes into the second period of normal time, Dixon brilliantly controlled a long pass from Donal Branagan, before turning smartly to finish beautifully past a stranded Andrew McNulty.
Bohs restored parity just past the hour mark when Paddy Seery headed home following an excellent free-kick delivery by Lee Dixon.
Rovers’ Graham Gartland had to be alert to clear a Shaun Stewart strike off the line on 68 minutes.
The hosts soon regained their focus thanks to some incisive runs by Shannon and Greene.
Bohs received a major boost with six minutes left of normal time when Rovers replacement Niall Forrester was given his marching orders.
