Jack Kelly, Ian O’Kelly and Dan O’Donovan helped themselves to tries at Donnybrook yesterday, as 14-man St Michael’s College overcame St Andrew’s College in the first round of the Leinster Schools’ Senior Cup.

The 2012 champions had suffered a major setback on 18 minutes when flanker Oisin Dowling was red-carded after a clash with Peter Sullivan.

The Andrew’s centre was sent to the sin-bin for his part in this incident, but before he returned to the field, Michael’s had broken the deadlock with a 24th-minute try by full-back Kelly.

Fly-half O’Kelly also crossed over two minutes before the interval, and thanks to a routine three-pointer from replacement Harry Byrne, the Ailesbury Road outfit had developed a 15-0 cushion by the 38th minute.

After much perseverance, centre Jordan Larmour dived over via a neat Sean Ballance off-load to finally open the Andrew’s account 14 minutes from time, but after Byrne added a successful place-kick, O’Donovan sealed the Michael’s win with a late intercept try.
