Jordan to rescue for Monkstown
RUGBY: Captain Robert Jordan came to the rescue of CBC Monkstown at Donnybrook yesterday afternoon, when his stoppage-time penalty helped the Dun Laoghaire side to a 15-13 victory in this Leinster Schools’ Senior Cup clash with St Gerard’s, Bray.
A strong eighth-minute line-out maul from Monkstown had produced a try for No 8 William Fay, before Gerard’s reduced their deficit with a successful close-range penalty from out-half Tom Foley.
In spite of their territorial dominance during the first-half, Monkstown had to be content with a slender 5-3 lead at the mid-way point, but after Shane O’Hanrahan opted for touch four minutes after the restart, the powerful Fay registered his second try of the contest.
An excellent Jordan conversion created significant daylight between the teams, but Foley provided the Wicklow school with a new lease of life by crossing over on 45 minutes.
Indeed,Gerard’s looked set to snatch victory from the jaws of the defeat when centre Marc Baker secured an unconverted score on the stroke of 70 minutes, but Jordan had the final say six minutes into time added on.
