Leinster Rugby wary of dangerous Glasgow Warriors
December will prove to be a busy month for Leo Cullen’s Leinster, as they face back-to-back European Rugby Champions Cup encounters against defending champions Toulon.
However, before they focus their minds on those crunch meetings with the Top 14 giants, they will need to concentrate on the trip to Scotstoun Stadium tomorrow afternoon, and a Guinness Pro12 fixture against Glasgow Warriors.
Glasgow secured the 2014/15 Pro12 title at the expense of Munster last May, but speaking in Ballsbridge on Wednesday, Leinster flanker Jordi Murphy feels that his side are more than capable of picking up a positive result.
“They are a top quality side and current champions. It is a very tough place to go and win, but they were overturned by Northampton there two weeks ago only. We know we can go over and do it,” Murphy stated.
“We are neck and neck in the table, and it is one of those games that we both really want to win. It’s only a week to go after that to the Champions Cup [away to Toulon]. There is a lot on the line.”
Although they are in a precarious position in their European pool, six wins from eight outings has ensured that Leinster currently occupy fourth place in the Pro12 table. A try from Sean Cronin helped to secure an 8-3 victory over inter-provincial rivals Ulster in the RDS last Friday, and Murphy revealed that it has lifted the mood in the camp.
“Yeah, it definitely has [lifted the mood]. It was a disappointing couple of weeks behind us. Had no time to kind of, I don’t know, sit back and feel sorry for ourselves. We had a big game against familiar foes [Ulster] and it was good to get a win against them.
“It’s one of those things, trying to build the confidence back up. There is a good mood going around at the moment, and we’re looking forward to a big game against Glasgow at the weekend.”
The Barcelona-born Murphy made his debut for Leinster against Glasgow just over four years ago, and should he be selected in tomorrow’s match-day squad, he will make his 64th appearance for the province.
He has featured in all three back-row positions for Leinster, but is eager to a nail down a specific position in the long-term.
“It is one of those things, versatility has got me quite far obviously and it’s been great for me, but I’ll have to start thinking a bit more selfishly and try and nail down a single position.
“I know that I can play a good quality level in all three, but whether I can play at world class level in one of those three is a different thing. I’m thinking about it all the time, but I am definitely just trying to nail down [one] and have a chat with coaches,” Murphy added.
