LEINSTER SH LEAGUE

Burke and Walsh give North edge

IT proved to be a successful start to Leinster Schools Senior Hurling ‘A’ League for Dublin South and Dublin North yesterday, as the Metropolitan outfits recorded impressive victories.

Playing in the DCU Sportsgrounds, North took part in an entertaining contest with St Peter’s College of Wexford.

They had a total of nine different scorers throughout the course of the action, but thanks to a goal from Colin Currie, they led by five points (1-10 to 0-8) at the mid-way point.

Mark Phelan, Cian O’Sullivan and Darragh Gray all produced excellent displays, and even though Peter’s were potent in attack, three-pointers in the second-half by Conor Burke and John Walsh ensured that North recorded a 3-16 to 2-13 triumph.

South faced a tricky away assignment against St Brendan’s of Birr, but with Ballyboden netminder Conor O’Donoghue in fine form, they were able to develop a strong attacking platform. Ciaran Dowling ended the game with a personal tally of 0-5, and with Aaron Coffey contributing an outstanding haul of 3-1, they finished with six points to spare (4-14 to 2-14).

Their next league fixture is set to take place next week against St Kieran’s College, while Dublin North will also compete with Kilkenny opposition – Castlecomer Community School.
