GAELIC GAMES: DUBLIN SHC ‘A’
Benildus boys can’t afford any more slip-ups in group stage
CATHAL Kissane came to the rescue of St Benildus College in Ballyroan on Tuesday afternoon, when the Kilmacud school shared the spoils with Colaiste Eanna in the Dublin Schools SH ‘A’ Championship.
A series of scores by Eoin Foley – as well as a Fiachra McLoughlin goal – helped Benildus to open a two-point cushion in the latter stages of the contest, and even though Ciaran Ryan registered a 58th minute three-pointer for Eanna, the excellent Kissane’s intervention meant that they shared the spoils.
Following an earlier defeat to St Aidan’s CBS, Benildus can’t afford to slip up in their remaining fixtures with St Fintan’s HS and Ardscoil Ris, but with two wins, one draw and defeat from their four group outings, Eanna’s prospects of a first final success since 2012 remain alive.
A top-three finish in this five-team group ensures qualification for the knockout stages, and thanks to outstanding victories so far against Eanna and Benildus, another triumph for 2013 winners St Aidan’s CBS over defending champions Ardscoil Ris can help them to finish at the summit of the table, which would mean automatic qualification for the decider.
Colin Currie, Conor Burke and Sean Baxter produced impressive displays for Ardscoil in their reversal against Eanna last month, and courtesy of their earlier success over Fintan’s (who are still searching for their first point in Roinn 1), they are in the reckoning with two games still to play.
