INSPIRED by an impressive first-half showing, St Vincent’s CBS book their place in the Tom Quinlan Shield Final on Tuesday with a three-point victory over a spirited HFCS Rathcoole side.
Having trailed by nine points (2-4 to 0-1) at the interval stage, a galvanised Rathcoole (who were playing hosts to their Glasnevin counterparts) managed to stay in contention until the closing moments of the contest, but thanks to courageous defensive work by Max Popovs and Taylor Byrne, Vincent’s did enough to prevail.
With midfielder Bao Tran in fine form, Vincent’s made an encouraging start to the proceedings, and they raised the first green flag of the day courtesy of a speculative Brooklyn Vodo effort.
This gave Shay McGovern’s charges to confidence to search for further scores, and in addition to some fine contributions by Adam Berrigan and Craig Bradell, a second goal from imposing full-forward Nikita Gaydenko gave them a commanding lead heading into the second period.
Although their deficit appeared to be insurmountable, Rathcoole played with great determination when the action resumed. A late goal from them set-up a nerve-wracking finale for Vincent’s, as scoring opportunities were at a premium.
An earlier three-pointer by the outstanding Gaydenko did provide them with a vital edge, however, and the north Dubliners will now progress to the decider alongside Moyle Park College.
