IT was a close contest throughout the course of the hour, but in spite of an outstanding display by Alex Considine, Dublin South were ultimately on the receiving end of a narrow defeat to Castlecomer Community School in a competitive Leinster Senior Hurling ‘A’ League encounter.

The Kilkenny outfit are usually a difficult side to beat on their home patch, and with South’s hand forced by the absence of several players owing to club commitments, it was going to take a massive effort it they were to return with an away success.

However, thanks to strong showings from the likes of Ciaran Brady, James Holland and Justin Byrne, the Metropolitan outfit were well in contention early on.

Considine and Ryan Doyle were dangerous operators in attack, and it was the latter who found the net during the opening period.

Aidan Mellett was also making a sizeable impression on the game, but even though they came under plenty of pressure from the determined visitors, it was Castlecomer who held a slender 1-8 to 1-7 lead at the interval.

At this point, it was very difficult to predict how the game would pan out, as both sides were proving to be accurate in front of the posts.

Castlecomer generally held a slight edge over their opponents, but when Considine registered a second goal ten minutes from time, a tension-filled conclusion was in store.

Between them, Doyle and Considine contributed 2-6 of their side’s total. The performance of Donnacha Ryan also stood out, and even though the hosts ultimately sealed the points on offer, Dublin South can be pleased with their overall play ahead of their second game of the competition against St Peter’s of Wexford next week.
