Byrne to the four in Old Bawn stroll
By Daire Walsh
A COMMANDING start to proceedings proved crucial for Old Bawn Community School in Kiltipper Road on Tuesday afternoon, as they comfortably overcame the challenge of a depleted Moyle Park College, 13-17 to 1-2, in the quarter-final of the Dublin Schools Junior ‘C’ Championship, played on Thomas Davis’ all-weather pitch.
Old Bawn took charge early on with points from Alan Hudson and Chris Sallier, before John Redmond secured the first goal of the afternoon after five minutes following an excellent team move.
This score was quickly supplemented by points from Sallier, Ryan Deegan (’65’) and David Byrne, before a hat-trick of goals from Byrne, and one from half-forward Sallier, moved them into a 20-point lead with just 16 minutes gone.
Moyle Park finally opened their account 20 minutes in, when midfielder Micheal Walsh brilliantly goaled from all of 35 metres.
Adam Doyle added to this score shortly after with a fine point out on the left-wing, but Old Bawn majors from David Byrne, sub Dylan Hanley and Eoin McGuigan meant that the Tallaght school held an unassailable 8-11 to 1-1 lead at the mid-way stage.
Old Bawn continued to take the chances that came their way, as a point from Hudson was added to almost immediately by another Hanley goal.
Further Old Bawn goals arrived through Hanley (who notched a hat-trick, just like David Byrne ), Hudson and Deegan.
Despite the best efforts of a committed Moyle Park side, the only score they could muster after the resumption was a second Doyle point, as Old Bawn further enhanced their superiority with goal number 13 from Deegan.
