ROBERT Byrne was the star performer at O’Toole Park.

His 2-2 haul helped St Colmcille’s Community School to record a comprehensive victory over Salesian College in the final of the Dublin Schools Juvenile Hurling ‘B’ competition.

Played in near-perfect conditions in the Crumlin venue, the north Kildare school did get off to an excellent start, and registered a deflected goal midway through the opening half, but with Conor Barton, James Madden, Karl Weldon and McCormack (two) all finding the target, they produced an emphatic response to this early setback.

Full-forward Byrne was then on hand to secure the first of his two majors, but with Salesian finishing the period in confident fashion, the Knocklyon school’s lead had been reduced to just two points by the interval. Enda Conneely’s charges would have the wind at their backs upon the resumption, but Colmcille’s knew that they had to be on top of their game in the second period, as Salesian were ready to pounce if they slackened their performance level to any major degree.

They were in firm control of the play after the restart, though, as further scores from Christian Tshiabongo, Darragh Jones, Weldon, Madden, Barton and Cathal McCarron edged them in a seemingly unassailable position.

Byrne also bagged his second goal during a purple patch for his side, and with inside partner McCormack finishing with an impressive 0-4 to his name, they eased their way towards victory.

This was an outstanding achievement for Colmcille’s, and with Madden, McCormack, Conor O’Donoghue and Cillian Byrne all being part of the Dublin South team that recently secured the Leinster Juvenile Hurling ‘A’ League title, the future is bright for the Dublin 16 brigade.
