A GOAL from Tony Kenny proved to be of crucial importance at O’Toole Park last Wednesday.

Belvedere College held off a strong challenge from CBC Monkstown to secure the Rugby Schools Senior Football crown.

This is a competition designed especially for schools that would be best-known for their prowess on the rugby field, and both Belvedere and Monkstown fit the bill in this regard.

However, the ideal location of the Great Denmark Street school means that a number of well-established clubs in north Dublin have members that attend Belvedere, and their senior side mostly consists of players from the nearby outfits of Na Fianna, St Brigid’s and Clontarf.

In terms of the match itself, Belvedere always looked the more likely victors from an early stage in the contest, even though Monkstown led briefly during the opening period, and were also on level terms with their northside rivals on a couple of occasions.

Belvedere were always ready for the challenge posed by CBC, though, and had a fine base to build on in defence thanks to excellent operators like Patrick Foley, Eoin Coyne and Oisín O’Connell.

VITAL

The presence of Rob Fenlon in midfield was also vital towards their cause, but to Monkstown’s credit, they kept within touching distance of their opponents, and there was never more than a couple of points between the teams at any point.

The Belvedere forwards were generally able to take the opportunities that came their way, however, and with James Meade, Eoin Murchan and Fiachra O’Meara all chipping in with fine points, which complemented Kenny’s decisive major quite nicely, Belvedere College were able to seal a hard-earned two-point success.
