At the end of a tentative Kildare SFC Group C affair at Manguard Plus Hawkfield on Saturday, St Laurence’s and Confey were content to settle for a share of the spoils.
Whereas Padraig Fogarty and Adam Steed were the main scoring threats for St Laurence’s, James Gately and Eoin Dennehy were the go-to players in the Confey attack.
Gately was Confey’s standout performer in the opening moments, kicking three successive points. Laurence’s eventually found their feet either side of the first-quarter mark.
Following a Steed brace, Fogarty (free), Padraig O’Neill and the pacy Jason McHugh found the range. Despite Confey firing back through Dennehy and defender Imad Mirza (’45’), Kevin Eustace and Fogarty ensured Larries led 0-7 to 0-6 at the half-time break.
On the resumption Gately and Slattery got Confey back on track in the second period. Fogarty and Steed bolstered their own personal tally for a determined Larries, only for opposition defender Joe Kilbane to break forward for a levelling score on 41 minutes.
It wasn’t until the 52nd-minute that the next score arrived and once again it was the trusty right boot of Fogarty that served Larries well. However, Dennehy levelled with a 35m free.
