Maynooth overcame a late Johnstownbridge rally to get their SFC Group B campaign off to a perfect start.

JTB raced into a five-point lead with a brace of Kelvin McNally scores, as well as one each from Daniel Flynn, Sean Hurley and Sam Doran. After the water break Cathal McCabe (two), Mark Donnellan and Phillip Murphy all found the range.

While their opponents responded with a goal from Glenn Doran, Eoin Donnellan did likewise to leave the sides tied at 1-6 apiece. The loss of Mark Donnellan to injury could have deflated Maynooth, but it didn’t.

After sharing six points Maynooth edged in front when McCabe angled a shot beyond Ryan Comeau. Their Coolree counterparts replied with a Ronan Scanlon point, before Maynooth stepped up a gear.

Jonathan Flattery and Darren Maguire posted points, Kevin Dunne rattled the net, Dan Flynn hit 1-2 but it was too little too late.
