Dublin Colleges Senior Camogie ‘A’ Final: St Joseph’s College, Lucan V Maryfield College – The Evening Herald – January 31 2013

Magic Morrissey seals senior joy for Joseph’s girls

DUBLIN SCHOOLS CAMOGIE SENIOR ‘A’ FINAL

ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE, LUCAN 3-5 MARYFIELD COLLEGE 1-7

A 2-2 HAUL from Laura Morrissey was vital in Sancta Maria College last Thursday afternoon, as St Joseph’s College, Lucan secured a Senior and Junior ‘A’ camogie double following a four-point victory over Maryfield College.

Coming hot on the heels of their junior success against St Mac Dara’s Community College (which represented the first piece of silverware for the school’s camogie section), Joseph’s approached the challenge of the Drumcondra school with plenty of confidence and, thanks to a 15th-minute goal from Morrissey, they had an early platform to build on.

Maryfield were proving to be more than capable competitors, however, and a major from Aisling Maher sparked serious life into the contest.

Joseph’s finished the half in fine fashion, though, and with Morrissey finding the back of the for a second time five minutes before the interval, the Lucan girls took a slender lead (2-2 to 1-4) into the second period.

This set the game up tantalisingly upon the resumption, and with Maher continuing to cause problems for the Joseph’s rearguard, in addition to a strong midfield performance by Elaine O’Leary, there was little to separate the teams for the most part.

Some fine saves by netminder Jenny Ryan managed to keep Maher and company at bay during vital junctures, though, and with Alison Twomey (two) and Morrissey registering points, supplemented by a third goal from Ciara Sheehan, Joseph’s were able to hold out for a historic victory.
