Flynn the star for Maynooth

MAYNOOTH PP       2-7

PORTMARNOCK      0-8

First-half goals from Conor Davin and Owen Byrne paved the way for Maynooth’s success at DCU as the Moyglare Road side overcame Portmarnock.

Maynooth had enjoyed a dream start with a free from Neil Flynn being followed up by midfielder Conor Davin’s flicked finish past Luke Kavanagh.

Centre-forward Shane Carthy registered Portmarnock’s first two scores, but they were cancelled out by a brace from Flynn. The second major of the contest arrived courtesy of Byrne on 19 minutes. Maynooth led 2-6 to 0-3 at half-time.

However, with seven minutes remaining Portmarnock had reduced the deficit to five thanks to Darragh Scanlon, Aaron Mulvey and Carthy (3).

A seventh Flynn point on 55 minutes halted Portmarnock’s comeback. The closing stages saw dismissals for Maynooth’s Shane Monaghan and Portmarnock’s Denis Redmond.
