Maynooth hold on

SECOND-HALF goals from Paul Maguire and Jack Foley were vital at the DCU Sportsgrounds last Thursday, as Maynooth PP held off a strong fightback from St Colmcille’s Community School to secure the Dublin Schools Juvenile ‘B’ Football title, 2-5 to 1-7.

At the end of a fiercely competitive opening period, Maynooth led 0-5 to 0-1 thanks to four perfectly measured frees by Niall Kinirons, with Colmcille’s only score coming from Ross McClleland.

Points from Darragh Jones and Cillian Byrne reduced the deficit to two shortly after the restart, but Maynooth rallied spectacularly, with an outstanding goal from Maguire followed by a second from Foley giving the Moyglare Road outfit an eight-point cushion.

Colmcille’s displayed tremendous character to reduce the margin to the minimum with five minutes left, following points from McClleland and Cillian Byrne (three) and an excellent goal from McClleland. But, with Cathal Duff and Aidan O Riain superbly anchoring their defence, the north Kildare side were able to hold out for victory.

Elsewhere, Chanel College were also victorious in a six-goal thriller when defeating Colaiste Chiarain 3-13 to 3-7 in the Juvenile Football ‘D’ Final.
