FIRST-HALF goals from Dean Farrell and Sean Boylan proved crucial on the Ballymun Kickhams Astro Turf on Monday, as Donahies Community School came through a competitive Dublin Schools Junior Hurling ‘D’ final against Holy Family Community School, Rathcoole, with five points to spare.
Things had looked ominous in the early stages for Donahies when Rathcoole moved into a 1-2 to 0-0 lead, and when the Donaghmede side were reduced to 14 men midway through the half, it seemed like they were in for a tough day’s work.
However, they displayed tremendous resolve despite their numerical advantage, and well-taken majors from the powerful Farrell and Boylan gave them a 2-3 to 1-4 cushion heading into the second period. Another goal for Rathcoole upon the resumption reduced Donahies’ advantage to the bare minimum, but a series of scores from Farrell (who moved from his full-forward post to take up the role of a third midfielder) as well as one from Jordan Guiden kept their opponents at bay.
Farrell finished the game as top scorer with 1-6, but fine performances from Aaron Smith, Guiden, Jamie Bishop and Sean Eustace were of equal importance for the Dublin 13 school.
