Newbridge overcome slow start

Leinster Schools’ Senior Cup, first round

Newbridge College 45

CBC Monkstown 7

Daire Walsh, Donnybrook

Newbridge College will face Kilkenny College in the Leinster Schools’ Senior Cup quarter-final after recovering from a shaky start at Donnybrook yesterday.

Despite being rank outsiders, Monkstown broke the deadlock with a converted Conor Anderson try on the first-quarter. They looked set to hold onto this lead until the interval – only for Newbridge skipper Marcus Kiely to pounce for his own score in stoppage-time.

Samuel Prendergast supplied the extras to leave the sides on level terms (7-7) and the out-half created daylight with a brace of penalties on the resumption. Following additional tries by James Gaire, David O’Sullivan, Kiely, Donough Lawlor and Conor Halpenny, the Johne Murphy-coached outfit eased into the last-eight.

Scorers for Newbridge College: M Kiely 2 tries, J Gaire, D O’Sullivan, D Lawlor, C Halpenny try each, S Prendergast 3 cons, 3 pens.
