Eden-Whatiri’s late try sets up a dramatic win for Old Belvedere
All-Ireland League Division 1A St Mary’s16 Old Belvedere 18: Josh Eden-Whatiri and Stephen Crosbie were the heroes at Templeville Road last night as their respective try and conversion deep into stoppage time gave Old Belvedere a dramatic victory over St Mary’s.
Fullback Gavin Dunne’s penalty gave St Mary’s an early lead. Belvedere’s Crosbie equalised within three minutes. St Mary’s were in front again midway through the half, when winger Conor Hogan scored a try following a neat offload by prop Colm McMahon.
Dunne secured the bonus and added a second penalty after 27 minutes, giving St Mary’s a 13-3 interval lead.
Swapped penalties from Crosbie and Dunne meant Mary’s still led by 10 but on 66 minutes flanker Jack Conan touched down in the right corner. Secondrow Eden-Whatiri pounced to register his side’s second try four minutes into stoppage time and Crosbie sealed a most impressive comeback.
