FAI Ford Cup Post-Match Reaction: Avondale Manager John Cotter – The Evening Echo – August 25 2012

Cotter proud of men

SPEAKING after the game, Avondale manager John Cotter was disappointed to have conceded a goal so close to half-time, but was nevertheless pleased with the way that the FAI Intermediate Cup champs performed writes DAIRE WALSH.

“A bad time, and it was a bad corner to concede but on a night like this with the big lads we have we didn’t think we’d concede from a set-piece. It was disappointing to concede, but in fairness in the second half the lads responded well,” Cotter stated.

“With the way the game went, we probably could have got a draw. We acquitted ourselves well. Bohs are a top side. They’ve great history in the league. All the lads can be proud of themselves. Not just the (starting) 11, but the lads that came on, the whole squad. It was a great performance by us in fairness.”

On an evening when Avondale had many fine performers, goalkeeper David O’Keeffe was a real stand-out, keeping his side in it with two penalty saves in the first half, and a string of stops in the second. This was something that delighted Cotter on a personal level, as he felt it was a great reward for a true club legend.

“It was one of those nights for him. We were going to put him up for a corner because he’d probably score! He’s outstanding, he deserves all the credit he gets.”
