A FIRST-HALF goal from Evan McMillan proved to be the difference in Dalymount Park yesterday afternoon, as ten-man Bohemians got back to winning ways with a narrow victory in a tentative Dublin derby.

Speaking after the game, Bohs supremo Aaron Callaghan was pleased to come away with all three points, especially in light of their heavy European defeat in Iceland earlier in the week.

“We were looking for a reaction after the result the other night, and I thought we got one,” said Callaghan.

“I thought the lads were fantastic against a very good UCD side. We worked hard all day. We got a goal from a set-piece, which is fantastic.

“It’s always difficult against UCD, because they pass the ball around. You have to get into their faces and stop them playing.”

Callaghan’s charges started brightly, and almost took a lead when Michael Barker passed through to Karl Moore seven minutes in, but the winger’s firm strike was turned away by UCD custodian Mark McGinley.

Rampant

Bohs swiftly took a firm grip on the proceedings, and eventually took the lead 24 minutes in when McMillan headed home powerfully from a Ryan McEvoy corner.

Bohs were beginning to look rampant at this stage, and UCD netminder McGinley had to be at his
best to tip over an Andy Mulligan drive just three minutes before the break.

The industrious Dwayne Wilson almost pulled off a spectacular goal when he attempted an audacious chip on the turn 58 minutes in, but McGinley read his intentions expertly.

McGinley’s assured performance between the sticks was keeping his side in contention, and he tipped over superbly from another attempted lob, this time from sub Keith Ward.

Incident

With 15 minutes remaining Bohs’ Dave Scully was given a straight red-card, just five minutes after being introduced, following an off-the-ball incident with David O’Connor.

Despite being under the cosh, Bohs held on.

But Callaghan felt that being a man led to some nervy moments, and said he will address the situation with Scully, who had already been red-carded twice this season.

“We have to have a chat with Dave, and sit down and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he added.
