St Mary’s College have booked a spot in the Leinster Schools Junior Cup semi-final, by edging out local rivals, Terenure College at Donnybrook, yesterday afternoon.
In a low-scoring affair, Mary’s full-back, Max Svejdar, was wide of the mark with an early penalty. However, Terenure’s line was eventually breached by outside centre, Rob Nolan, who crossed over via a pass out wide from midfield partner, Barra O’Loughlin.
This offered the Rathmines school a 5-0 interval buffer, but Terenure had an ideal opportunity to open their account after the restart. Much to the relief of the St Mary’s faithful, Mattie Lynch’s close-range place-kick drifted past the target.
This handed the initiative back to Mary’s, who ultimately secured a safe passage to the final four, with a 56th-minute try from their impressive lock, Hugo Massey.
