St Michael’s College booked their place in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup quarter-finals thanks to a 12-point victory over Terenure College at Donnybrook yesterday.
A Jamie Devlin penalty helped Terenure to take the lead during a bright start to the contest, but this was cancelled out with an effort from Michael’s captain David Ryan (the younger brother of Ireland international James).
Yet, following a prolonged attack in the 17th-minute, ‘Nure centre Adam La Grue touched down for a converted score.
However, when hooker Lee Barron finished off a powerful driving maul on the half-hour mark, Ryan kicked five points without reply to hand Michael’s a 13-10 interval advantage.
Terenure suffered a further setback at the start of the second period, as impressive flanker Scott Penny touched down after a Ryan effort had rebounded off the post.
Another Devlin place-kick briefly halted the St Michael’s momentum, before a superb five-pointer by Cosgrave sealed the progression of the Ailesbury Road outfit.
