THEY were push all the way by St Joseph’s, Lucan at Clanna Gael Fontenoy last Friday, but Colaiste Íosagáin ultimately held on to their Dublin Schools Senior Camogie ‘A’ Championship title.
A 1-1 salvo by Sinéad De Bhuilde provided the Booterstown school with a dream start to the contest, before Jessica McClelland’s magnificent three-pointer for Joseph’s was followed by an Aoife McKearney equaliser.
Asha Heibe and Lucan’s Sadhbh Duffy traded goals as the half progressed, but with Michelle Ní Chiardha and De Bhuilde finding the target, Íosagáin were two points in front (2-4 to 2-2) at the break. Joseph’s then restored parity through McKearney and Laura Quinn on the resumption, and the Gaelscoil needed a Ní Chiardha point to help them settle again.
Yet, when Quinn (two) and McKearney singles were supplemented by a second Duffy goal on 57 minutes, Joseph’s had gained the upper hand. However, after Niamh Nic Cormaic found the back of their net, De Bhuilde’s latest point ensured that extra-time was required.
The defending champions entered additional time with momentum behind them, and following another Nic Cormaic major, they opened up a six-point gap on 70 minutes. McKearney and Quinn added subsequent scores for Joseph’s, but with Sarah Ní Fhionnláin also splitting the posts, Íosagáin claimed back-to-back crowns.
