IT was a high-scoring encounter at Ballymun Kickhams GAA last Thursday afternoon, but Ardgillan Community College ultimately came out on top against Colaiste Chillian in a thrilling Dublin Schools Junior Football ‘E’ Championship final.
Ardgillan had initially advanced to the knockout stages of this competition from a group that included St Finian’s CC, Balbriggan CC and Colaiste Dhulaigh, and following their commanding 9-7 to 1-5 semi-final win against Scoil Ui Chonaill, they were in a confident mood ahead of their showdown with Chillian.
However, their Nangor Road counterparts emerged from a four-team section which also featured Colaiste Mhuire, Tallaght CS and Firhouse CC, and displayed grit and determination in their 3-8 to 2-7 final-four victory against Trinity Comprehensive.
This helped to increase anticipation ahead of their meeting with Ardgillan on Ballymun’s all-weather surface, but despite playing some superb football on the day, the Balbriggan school triumphed on a score of 6-13 to 2-15.
Indeed, it proved to be an extremely eventful day for Ardgillan, who also booked their spot in the Dublin Juvenile Hurling ‘E’ semi-final with a 7-9 to 1-2 win over Beneavin College.
