A STRONG first-half display set the foundations for St Joseph’s, Rush’s Dublin Schools Senior Hurling ‘C’ Championship triumph over Scoil Chaitriona at the DCU Sportsgrounds on Tuesday afternoon.
Joseph’s secured the Dublin Senior Football ‘C’ crown as recently as February 10, and with a number of players involved in both squads, it is proving to be an extremely memorable 2017 for the northside school.
DEADLOCK
Chaitriona had broken the deadlock with an early goal, but after they settled with points from Kevin O’Connor, Paul Jones and Glenn Weldon (three), Joseph’s produced a green flag effort of their own through Finbarr Hartford.
Scoil Chaitriona’s Peadar O Finneadha brilliantly turned away a subsequent penalty, but courtesy of another goal by O’Connor, prior to the half-hour mark, Joseph’s were 2-6 to 1-2 in front at the midway point in the contest.
Yet, Joseph’s netminder Cian Daly also denied Chaitriona from the penalty spot when the action resumed.
The Mobhi Road crew managed to reduce their deficit to just three points. However, Joseph’s never allowed their heads to drop, and although Colm de Grae and Sean O Fuarain led by example for Chaitriona, a third goal by Cathal Price left the Rush boys with seven points to spare in the end.
