Shelbourne 2 Monaghan 1
SECOND-HALF goals from Paddy Kavanagh and David Cassidy were crucial in Tolka Park last night, as Shelbourne narrowly overcame the challenge of a determined Monaghan United.
Roddy Collins’ charges had looked on course for a surprise victory when Willo McDonagh converted a 54th minute penalty, but Shels fought back to earn a deserved triumph.
Monaghan had done to well to get through a tricky first half, after Shels squandered plenty of chances.
But they would go on to take a surprise lead on 54 minutes when Willo McDonagh powerfully drilled a penalty past Dean Delany following a rash foul in the area by Sean Byrne on Jordan Keegan.
This came as a shock to the system for Shels, but they would restore parity to the contest just seven minutes later, when Kavanagh finished coolly from close-in after Cassidy’s miscued attempt had fallen into his path.
Cassidy then finished past the onrushing Schlingermann with a sublime lob from a long ball over the top to win the game as it swung both ways late on.
