Blackrock College advanced to a Leinster Schools Senior Cup semi-final of the Leinster Schools Senior Cup after a 20-point win over Terenure College at Donnybrook yesterday.
The winners opened the scoring after six minutes – Tom Maher sprinting over the whitewash after he was picked out on the right-flank by Peter O’Reilly who later landed the conversion. Following excellent approach work from full-back Tom Roche, Maher dotted down for his second try on 20 minutes but O’Reilly was unable to add the extras.
Terenure eventually found their feet in the lead-up to the interval. Excellent build-up play from out-half Mark Fabian and Adam La Grue paved the way for Zac Vaughan to touch down. Fabian converted to leave just five points (12-7) between the teams at the break.
However, Blackrock restored their 12-point advantage four minutes after the restart. Scrum-half Patrick Patterson grounded after spotting a gap to the left the posts, and when O’Reilly added a penalty in the 59th-minute, the outcome was placed beyond any doubt. Replacement Mark Phelan completed the scoring with a simple finish from the final attack of the tie, as Justin Vanstone’s charges progressed in emphatic style.
