Roberto Lopes’ goal enough for Bohemians
Bohemians 1, Shamrock Rovers 0: A first-half goal from Roberto Lopes was the difference at Dalymount Park last night when Bohemians claimed the bragging rights over 10-man Shamrock Rovers in a tense Premier Division clash.
The Gypsies were eager to make amends for their 4-0 defeat to their rivals at the same venue in April, and deservedly took the lead in the 15th-minute.
A corner by Lorcan Fitzgerald was delivered into the path of Lopes, and the centre-half’s bullet header flew past Barry Murphy.
2013 All-Ireland SFC winner Shane Supple collected a low drive from Hoops striker Gary Shaw in the 38th-minute, but Bohs were full value for their one-goal interval cushion.
Following a disappointing first-half from their point of view, Rovers boss Sami Ristila was seeking an improvement from his side after the restart.
However, they suffered another set-back on 66 minutes, when skipper Patrick Cregg received a second yellow-card for an alleged dive.
The hosts’ numerical supremacy placed them in pole position for their 12th league win of 2016, and despite seeing a Shaw header marginally missing the target in second-half stoppage-time, Bohs ultimately claimed all three points in their final home game of the campaign.
