IT was a special day for St Kevin’s CBS and Ballymun Kickhams in the Aviva Stadium last Saturday, as Evan Comerford was named The Herald School Sports Star of the Year for 2016.
Comerford – who is the current Dublin minor goalkeeper – was a pivotal figure for Kevin’s in their Dublin Schools’ SF ‘B’ Championship victory over St Declan’s CBS in February, which also helped him to claim the weekly award.
In addition to future rugby stars like Luke Fitzgerald and Garry Ringrose, Comerford also joins the likes of Dublin footballers Cormac Costello and Ciaran Kilkenny in winning Herald schools awards, and he is flattered to be mentioned in the same breadth as them.
“It’s unbelievable. I completely didn’t expect it earlier when I heard the likes of Cormac Costello and Ciaran Kilkenny. You see the success that they’re having these days with the senior panel, it’s just crazy to even be mentioned with those kind of guys,” Comerford remarked.
Although it was great personal honour, Comerford was quick to point out that it was an excellent achievement for his school. They were close to making the breakthrough into the top-tier of senior football last year, and he was thrilled that they were able to get over the line in 2016.
“Yeah, obviously with Denis Foley and Ollie Clinton, they’ve put a lot of work in this year. We really kind of reaped the rewards from that.
“We had a lot of fourth and fifth years on the team this year, so I think they’re going to reap the success from the ‘A’ Championship next year as well,” Comerford said at the 10th Anniversary Awards.
