Leinster Schools’ Senior Cup Quarter-Final: Clongowes Wood College V CBC Monkstown – The Irish Examiner – February 10 2016

Classy Clongowes cruise into Schools’ Cup semis

By Daire Walsh

Clongowes Wood College 27 CBC Monkstown 5: Clongowes Wood College registered three tries at Donnybrook yesterday afternoon, as the clinical Clane side finished with 22 points to spare over CBC Monkstown in the quarter-final of the Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools’ Senior Cup.

Clongowes centre Benjamin O’Shea was short of the target from a fourth-minute penalty, but after Monkstown secured possession in front of the posts, he made no mistake from another close-range effort.

The eight-time champions held on to this slender advantage for the much of the opening period, before they finally enhanced their superiority with a powerful drive over the whitewash by Edward Carroll just beyond the half-hour mark.

O’Shea added the bonuses in routine fashion, but there was enough time for Monkstown full-back Tom Kelly to squeeze through for an unconverted try from the final attack of the half.

This meant only five points separated the teams during the break (10-5), but Clongowes were a rejuvenated side after the restart.

A successful 39th-minute place-kick from O’Shea created further daylight between the sides, and this was swiftly followed by a Jack Moore five-pointer.

It was beginning to look extremely ominous for Monkstown, and when flanker Sean McMahon touched down 14 minutes from time (after he blocked an attempted clearance), the outcome was placed beyond any doubt — and Clongowes will now compete at the semi-final stage for a third consecutive season.
