Clongowes Wood College and Gonzaga College booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Leinster Schools’ Senior Cup with wins over The King’s Hospital and Wesley College yesterday.

Eight-time winners Clongowes moved into the ascendancy with a converted try from lock Florence McCarthy, before King’s Hospital regained the lead with a 27th-minute five-pointer by Sean Goodburn.

Clongowes led 13-8 at the interval, and with Miles O’Connor, Jack Moore and Brian Maher all crossing the whitewash, they secured a 33-8 success.

Meanwhile at Castle Avenue, second-half tries from replacements Harry O’Grady and Alex McEvoy ensured that Gonzaga College defeated Wesley College. Wesley broke the deadlock on ten minutes, when Tim Spencer raced through for a converted try.

After a converted try from Gonzaga centre Harry Brennan the sides went in 7-7 at the interval. An Adam Curry penalty gave Wesley a slender advantage, however after O’Grady’s try on the hour mark, Gonzaga’s replacement hooker McEvoy sealed a 19-10 triumph with a try deep into second-half stoppage-time.
