Former Reds star Mathison eyes Munsters success
RUGBY: Tony Mathison is the latest southern hemisphere import hoping to make his name in Irish rugby.
Former Queensland Reds player Mathison was appointed Young Munster coach during the off season and begins the new season with an onerous AIL Division 1A opener against Lansdowne in Dublin tomorrow.
“It’s been great so far. I’ve settled into life in Limerick,” said Mathison who arrived in the Treaty City seven weeks ago. “Pre-season has been good. We’ve made some good progress and we’re reasonably confident with where we’re at the start of the season.”
Under the stewardship of John Staunton, Young Munster qualified for last season’s AIL semi-final against this weekend’s opponents. They were denied a place in the showpiece decider by a last-gasp Tyrone Moran try in extra-time.
Mathison has been able to view footage from a lot of the Limerick side’s game from the past 12 months, and is currently developing his knowledge of the other teams in Division 1A as well.
“I’ve got access and have seen most of last year’s fixtures, particularly on the Young Munster side of things. I’m still developing my knowledge of other teams. I’ll continue to do that as I go.”
