Tom Quinlan Shield: Late goal blitz for David’s
St David’s CBS 7-3 Skerries CC 3-12
JACK Keegan was the hero last Thursday afternoon at the DCU Sportsground, as his brace of late goals helped St David’s CBS to edge an absorbing Tom Quinlan Shield decider.
Skerries had led for much of the contest, but with Ronan Bonnie (brother of St Vincent’s corner-back Kevin) and captain Aaron Walsh leading by example, the Artane school ultimately secured back-to-back titles at this grade following a hectic conclusion.
With Ben Carkery Keogh in excellent scoring form, Skerries made the greater headway early on, and amassed seven unanswered points inside the first quarter. David’s did eventually settle with a well-worked goal from Luke Wade, but Skerries managed to bring a four-point cushion into the second period.
The Balbriggan Road outfit cancelled out a David’s penalty from Dwayne McCourt with a goal of their own after the restart, and looked primed for victory.
An outstanding McCourt goal from a close-in free was precisely the tonic that David’s needed, though, and when the he completed his hat-trick heading into the closing quarter, the Dublin 5 boys started to grow in confidence.
Bonnie moved from midfield to centre-forward and hit the back of the net. Then, courtesy of Keegan’s subsequent two-goal haul in second-half stoppage time, David’s snatched an unlikely win.
